ADHD diagnosis and treatment at Brunker Road Medical Centre
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition that can affect children or adults, but does not develop in adults if they did not have it in childhood.
The process of making a diagnosis requires information from school teachers for children, and evidence from old school reports or from family members, when available, for adults. It also involves assessment for other conditions that can mimic ADHD or occur with ADHD.
We can now provide a service to diagnose and treat ADHD, that was previously only available through paediatricians or psychiatrists. This can generally be done over the course of 3 clinic appointments, each of 30 minutes.
Of course not everyone undergoing the assessment will be found to have ADHD.
If there are other co occurring medical conditions these may need diagnosis and treatment by a paediatrician for children or a psychiatrist for adults.
We will have an accredited doctor to diagnose and treat ADHD in children from the age of 6 and in adults. in the near future.
If treatment with stimulants is started there will be follow up appointments at weekly then monthly intervals until treatment is stabilised. Many patients will be referred to allied health providers, depending on their individual needs.
This service will be available to current patients from the practice. It will likely be available from July 2027.
